Dear Members,

Firstly, I wish everyone a Happy New Year and great golfing in 2025.

I am writing to update everyone on some of the things that are happening on course and also just to remind everyone of a few safety matters on course.

1. New Tees on 7th and 13th holes

In consultation with the PGA, and in preparation for the upcoming Webex Players Series hosted by Peter O’Malley, we have built two new tees:

  • The men’s tee on the 7th hole has been lengthened and will be located behind the 6th green, toward Cranbrook.
  • The ladies’ tee on 13th has been brought back from where it was located last year and has been positioned right in front of the small creek at the front of the current 13th tee.

2. Player Safety

  • Members are reminded that when calling up players on any of the par 3 holes that they should stand behind the safety barriers located behind the green.  Players should also wait until the group has putted out before walking onto or near the green.
  • It has been noted of late an increase in the number of reports I receive about players hitting up on the group in front.  It is incumbent on the player hitting to ensure that all players in the group in front are clear of where they are intending to hit.   This is particularly important on holes 12 and 16 when tees are positioned forward, as some players will attempt to drive the green.

3. Buggies on the Green

At CHCC we permit buggies to be walked across the greens. Whilst this is accepted, it has been noted that some players, when putting out, are not parking their buggies off to the side of the green, but rather positioning them on the green whilst they putt.  This is not acceptable.  Please ensure that when putting your buggy is positioned off the green.

4: Course Care

Course care is the responsibility of every player.  The three golden rules of course care are:

  • If you take a divot-fill it in. Be that on the fairway or in the rough.
  • When leaving a bunker, rake it correctly. That means raking (pushing the sand toward the hole) not raking it back to the edge of the bunker. The rake should then be placed back in the bunker and NOT on the edge of the bunker.
  • When on the green, repair your lob mark.

5: Other Minor Works

  • Recent rains have relieved water pressures and dams are beginning to refill following a recent drought period.
  • 5th Tee – The circular concrete pathway and mounded garden bed at the 5th tee has been removed and will be returned to a more modest and practical turfed tee access area.
  • 6th fairway – A circular area on the 6th fairway, where a temporary green was once constructed, regularly showed signs of poor turf growth.  The team have excavated the sub-base and have laid a better growing profile before re-turfing.  The team have also investigated other potential issues, e.g. irrigation, to give this area every opportunity of bouncing back to full health.
  • 16th Fairway – One of our mowers encountered a hydraulic leak on the 16th hole recently.  The team urgently stripped this area and re-turfed it before it died and became unsightly.  We temporarily sourced turf from the 15th hole which has now been re-turfed.  These areas continue to recover well.
  • Red Azolla – The team have treated aquatic weed issues at the 5th hole with some success. The Red Azolla, brought on by high water temperatures, is quite prevalent in the ponds at the 10th and 11th holes.  The team are trialing control measures and hope to get on top of this weed.

We would like to thank all members for their cooperation.

Regards
Tony Cruise
