SPEED GOLF REPORT – 4 APRIL
Posted on: 10 April
Castle Hill’s second Speed Golf event was held last Friday evening and, if the energy of the crowd in the clubhouse afterwards is any measure, it was another resounding success.
A combination of experienced campaigners and excited debutants gathered around the first tee to watch Cameron Walker hit a few practice drives to check that he could carry the creek from the Blues. It was never in doubt – you could hear the ball screaming as it took off !!
After a few last minute withdrawals, a total of 44 players (we finished with 45 – see below) headed out to their allocated positions around the course and just after 6.00pm Cam launched into his tee shot. He carried the creek easily, and within seconds Keean Holmes drilled a magnificent 5 iron onto the green, and Louise Whalan calmly knocked in her first eagle putt – what a start! From there the pace was frenetic, with the ball back up at the top of the hill in less than 2 minutes.
For various and at times hysterical reasons progress slowed a little after that, but when the ball (finally) dropped in the hole on the 18th green the team had still eclipsed last years’ time by over a minute and set a new benchmark of 23 minutes 6 seconds.
There were too many highlights to record here, but some included:
- Some great improvisation on the 5th by Peter Taylor, who was just sitting in his cart spectating and then chased the ball down to the pond and calmly knocked a wedge onto the green (whoops – where were you, Ian Cochrane?). Pete therefore became our 45th player!!
- Wayne Cash, DEEP in the forest on the left of 7 and resembling Robin Hood as he fought his way out, rescuing an errant tee shot from our esteemed General Manager!
- The enthusiasm and blinding speed of our 2 runners, Ethan and Parker, saving valuable seconds between greens and tees
- The skill and accuracy of our young guns, particularly Nick Heanes, Andrew Kneeves and Jordyn Deen, who hit 7 tee shots between them and didn’t miss a fairway or green.
- Gibbo’s clever layup on 13 (most people would go for the green from 140 out, but he knew what he was doing!!)
- The bizarre 9 putt (or was it 10?) on the 18th green as a little panic set in – the cry “GET IN THE HOLE” echoing around the course. Hilarious!
Suffice to say a great time was had by all – stay tuned for details of the next event!
